Keates, Dewar and Waldock (2022)
Through a narrative review design this article examines how Transgender people with intellectual disabilities are perceived and discussed within academic literature. At time of writing and to the best of the author’s knowledge this is the first literature review to focus solely on Transgender people with intellectual disabilities. The results of review found that there was an over-medicalisation of both people with intellectual disabilities and Transgender people, lack of clear terminology and evidence that not conforming to cis gender identities and roles was seen as a problem to be delt with by services. The article concludes that better information is needed around gender identity to ensure services can better support Transgender people with intellectual disabilities.
