The rise of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in the early 2010s sent a shock wave through higher education. MOOC platforms were developed around the world, from America to Australia. This article explores MOOCs growth in the developed world and what is the role of the MOOC in the developing world could be. This literature review examines and compares the MOOC situation within the developing nations of Africa and South East Asia, with a review of previous e-Learning developments. The authors discuss the potential benefits of MOOCs for developing nations, and potential difficulties that may face those wishing to introduce MOOCs. The authors outline possible solutions to difficulties faced when implementing MOOCs into developing nations. The article concludes with a discussion as to the potential future for MOOCs in both Africa and South East Asia.
