The rise of the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) in the early 2010s was the cause of many discussions within the world of higher education. This literature review examined the early development of MOOCs and how they affected and were affected by pedagogy, both online and offline. The article details the variation in pedagogical style and design between the xMOOCs and the cMOOCs. The author goes on to review how teacher centric pedagogy and connectivist learning styles are viewed by teaching staff and students engaged with MOOCs. The author discusses whether connectivism is a pedagogy in its own right or merely a technologically enhanced version of Problem Based Learning (PBL) and social cultural theory. The article concludes by exploring how the effect of a shift in pedagogy within the sphere of MOOCs could change teaching methods in the offline classroom.
